Helena runs a busy practice, working with clients with a wide variety of health concerns. She has 10 years of clinical experience and continues to expand her knowledge base. Her goal is always to empower an individual to take control of their own health, with the focus being to provide each person with a better understanding of their body and how to look after it in the long-term, through motivation, inspiration and education. She focuses very much on looking at the underlying causes of health problems, as well as the symptoms themselves.

Conditions that Helena works with are very varied but include digestive problems such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), irritable bowel disease (for example Crohns disease and colitis), after-effects of antibiotics and food poisoning, bloating, indigestion, food intolerances and allergies. She also works very often with adrenal problems (often linked to stress) and other hormonal imbalances such as with the thyroid (hypothyroid and hyperthyroid) or sex hormone imbalances such as pre-menstrual tension (PMT), infertility and menopausal symptoms. Other health conditions that she works with include skin problems, headaches/migraines, depression, anxiety, low energy/fatigue, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis and many more. Detoxification and rebalancing the body are important aspects of her work.

When appropriate, Helena will organise functional and biochemical tests for clients when additional insight is needed into a case or to monitor symptoms and progress made. Whilst these tests are not essential, Helena will discuss these when appropriate and if they fit within a client's budget and preferences.

Appointment structure:

An initial consultation will last for one hour and include a detailed case history and diet analysis. A programme will then be developed to include dietary changes to support the needs of the individual. Supplements may be recommended, particularly in the short-term to help rebalance the body. Follow-up appointments are typically made for four weeks after the initial appointment, although this does vary. Ongoing appointments may be required but this is based on the needs of the client.

Follow-up appointments are 30 minutes in duration and include a review of progress made and adjustments to dietary and supplement programmes, as well as analysis of test results if appropriate.

Professional qualifications and experience:

Helena has a BSc (Hons) degree in Human Nutrition from Leeds Metropolitan University. She then completed a foundation degree and diploma in nutritional therapy with the renowned Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London. She is a member of the British Association for Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy (BANT) and is registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council. Ongoing professional development is an important part of her practice.

As well as working for the last 10 years in private practice, Helena has run workshops and talks on a variety of nutritional subjects. She has experience of working on both TV and on the radio, and has worked for several years with BBC Radio Sheffield, either being interviewed or presenting a phone-in on nutrition matters. She has also worked with the food industry, helping food companies with product development. Helena set up the nutritional side of the highly regarded weight loss camp, The Camp. She developed the nutritional programme and lectured there for the first year of it's courses. Derbyshire County Council has also employed her to deliver a county-wide initiative to support older people in the community through educational programmes including nutrition lectures and workshops.

Helena also works in the corporate field, delivering nutritional packages to organisations; providing health and wellbeing packages to help reduce stress, support energy levels and help mood and immune system function. These may be delivered as workshops or as one-to-one mini-consultations or full consultations.
